Ewart “Sonny” Phillips began his softball career in 1968 with the Hoyt Schooners.During the next three years his skills as a catcher and hitter would contribute to three New Brunswick and Maritime Intermediate Championships. In 1974 he graduated to the Fredericton Senior Men’s League and for twenty-one seasons was a major part of fourteen New Brunswick Championship teams.He represented New Brunswick at seventeen Canadian Senior Men’s Fast-Pitch Softball Championships, garnering all-star honours three times, and awards as the tournament’s top hitter in 1978 and Most Valuable Player in 1990. In 1978 he was recruited by the Victoria Budgets to play in the Pan American Games in Puerto Rico where the team won the gold medal. Having already been recognized by the Canadian and New Brunswick Softball Halls of Fame as well as the Fredericton Sports Wall of Fame, Sonny Phillips now takes his rightful place among New Brunswick’s sports greats.
