Biography

He was called “the father of English Rugby in the province.”It is claimed by many that “he produced more good football players than anyone else in the province.”The New Brunswick Rugby Union’s Executive Committee “believed that in the quarter of a century following 1920, no man did more to assist New Brunswick youth to a keener appreciation of the values of sport and sportsmanship.” “Bertie” Cass of Fredericton coached the High School Rugby Team for seventeen years – and produced twelve Provincial and three Maritime Champions!His players went on to stardom in college, university and senior leagues.Their names read like a “who’s who” of New Brunswick business and professional life.The “father” raised his sons well – and in doing so, created for himself a reputation as a builder of sport and of men. Enrolled in the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame, June 3rd, 1978.
