It isn’t easy to get from Chatham to the San Joaquin valley of California. Art Leggatt completed that trip, fuelled by the combination of a streaming fastball and unforgiving forkball. Following a two-year stint in the Cleveland Indians’ minor system, and, as a consequence of an arm that would not respond to treatment, he returned to the Miramichi to continue his 26-year career as one of our finest homegrown baseball talents. Championships came fast and frequently for his Ironmen teammates until his retirement in 1981. He has been honoured before, as a pro and amateur all-star, as sportsman of the year, and by induction in the New Brunswick Baseball and Chatham Halls of Fame. To paraphrase a former American general: “Old pitchers never die; they just become equally superb first basemen!” Enrolled in the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame, June 3, 1995.
