Biography
Dr. Roger Banister said that ”I sometimes think that running has given me a glimpse of the greatest freedom a man can ever know, the simultaneous liberation of mind and body.” The late Walter Ellis would surely have agreed. For, almost from the day he arrived in Saint John from Widnes, England, and despite an on-going battle with kidney disease, it was through the sport of track and field, at his school and in his adopted city and province, that he, always with his wife Judy, experienced that freedom and that fulfillment. He founded the Saint John track club, officiated at the Winnipeg Pan-American Games, coached the 1985 Canada Games team, served both the NBIAA and the NB Track and Field Association with distinction, and, in 1989, was coach for middle distances of Canada’s national junior team. Enrolled in the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame, June 6th, 1998.
