Biography

In this day of specialization one can occasionally find an athlete who excels in two sports. You may even be able to cite the name of one who played well in three sports. But five? And all at the highest level available to him or her? Hardly! Well, Oromocto's Mike Washburn is that one-in-a-million athlete whose resume includes Canadian professional football (in Vancouver and Montreal), national senior volleyball, Canada Games and CIAU track and field, national junior softball, and Atlantic University wrestling. Then, throw in a third place finish in the Gillette Canadian Open Fitness Challenge for good measure! His awards are many, all-star selections, M.V.P. trophies, athlete-of-the-year shields, enrolment in the Fredericton Sports Wall of Fame; but none is sweeter than the pleasure he derived from competing against the very best teams and individuals these five sports could provide. Enrolled in the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame, June 5th, 1999.
