Biography

From 1890 to 1900, Eddie Connolly established a reputation as one of boxing’s most respected competitors.This Saint John native, who fought in the United States and Overseas, began his fistic career as a Featherweight, graduated to the Lightweight division, and achieved his greatest success as a Welterweight. In 1896, he captured the British Empire Lightweight championship and four years later, he decisioned Matty Mathews in twenty-five gruelling rounds to lay claim to the World Welterweight crown. Connolly’s ear in the fight game was highlighted by marathon bouts, when a boxer’s ability was measured in terms of courage and durability. Enrolled in the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame, June 8th, 1974.
