He remembers with relish those early teen-age years when he first took up the sport of rifle shooting on the one-target range outside his hometown of Grand Falls. When he was only 13 his tutor, Al Estey, prophesied: "Don, if you keep on like that, you'll make the Bisley team one day." And that he did, in 1931, 1933, 1950 and 1954! His first taste of national competition was in Ottawa in 1923 when he was 15 years of age. In 1932 he fashioned a dramatic victory in the Governor-General's Gold Medal competition and won the Grand Aggregate Silver Medal. In 1953 he won the prestigious Macdonald Challenge Trophy. As he left the range he was reported to have said: "I've been trying to win this trophy since 1923; and I made up my mind this morning that I was going to take it!" He did!
