Born in Harvey Station, Catharine Pendrel became a Canadian mountain biking champion. At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janiero, an early crash landed her in 18th place. In a spectacular comeback she won the bronze medal. A four-time Olympian, she also appeared at Beijing in 2008, London in 2012, and Tokyo 2020. Pendrel began riding competitively at 16. She relocated to British Columbia to attend university and went on to have a long and distinguished biking career, winning two individual World Cup championships in 2011 and 2014. She also competed at two Pan-American Games, winning gold in 2007, and captured gold at the Commonwealth Games in 2014. In 2012, she received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. Kika, as she is known to friends, retired from competition in 2021, having won 41 World Cup races in all, and remained involved with Cycling Canada as a national team coach.
