Biography

Carl “Dutchie” Schell has been “Mr. Judo” to generations of New Brunswick youth for almost five decades. The founder of the first judo club at the Saint John YMCA and the Shimpokai Judo Club, he has been involved in developing the sport on every level.He established the New Brunswick Black Belt Association in 1961 and served two terms as President of Judo New Brunswick in addition to assuming other administrative and technical roles both provincially and nationally. In 1980 he was appointed coach of the New Brunswick team for national competitions.He later served as Executive Director of Judo New Brunswick and as the Atlantic vice-president of Judo Canada. His contributions to his sport have earned him membership in the Saint John Sports Hall of Fame and Judo Canada’s Hall of Fame, and his name is now added to the honour roll of the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame. Enrolled in the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame, June 9, 2007.
