Rogersville’s Armand Bernard began his career in freestyle wrestling in 1948 and one year later at the age of twenty, won his first Quebec provincial championship. During the following decade he won eight City of Montreal and Quebec provincial titles and four Canadian championships.In 1952, he represented Canada at the Helsinki Olympics, placing seventh in the 60-kilogram category, and two years later competed at the British Empire Games in Vancouver. Unlike today’s matches of three two-minute periods, Bernard’s era in freestyle wrestling featured bouts that were fifteen minutes long.With wrestling not yet established in the Atlantic Provinces, he trained and competed in the Province of Quebec. Following his retirement in 1957, his involvement in freestyle wrestling continued as a coach in Montreal and in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan.One of his athletes, Andy Tashlikovitch, won a World Junior Championship in 1970.
