On January 19th, 1982, 4,000 fans jammed the University of New Brunswick’s Aitken Centre in Fredericton for an American Hockey League game between the local “Express” and the visiting Hershey Bears. This wasn’t just another hockey game, for among those fans were former N.H.L. greats, “Toe” Blake, Howie Meeker, Ken Reardon and Gordie Drillon, Senator Louis J. Robichaud, Federal Sports Minister Gerald Regan and the loyal and vocal Hershey Fan Club.They all came to pay tribute to a local product who achieved greatness as a player, coach or scout with the Sudbury Wolves, Rochester Americans, Cincinnati Mohawks, Hershey Bears, Detroit Red Wings and Montreal Canadiens. New Brunswick’s first Provincial Sport Director has been described as “The Bobby Orr of Hershey Hockey” and as one who was “in a class by himself on the point and on the power-play.”He was, and still is, a winner; just ask any of those who played with him, for him, against him and because of him.
