The Sports Hall of Fame was established to perpetuate the memory and accomplishments of the greats in New Brunswick sport.As of tonight its walls will be adorned by the portraits of 5 world-class speed skaters – Gorman, Smyth, Willie Logan, Quigg and, in the view of many, the man who began this amazing string of provincial, regional, national and international championships, Frederick William Logan. Fred Logan’s career began in 1901 and ended in 1911.In that decade he literally re-wrote the record books over and over again.In 1907, his greatest year, he was Canadian, United States and International champion in some or all of the 220 yard, 880 yard, 1 mile and 3 mile events.From 1908 to 1911 he won 15 more regional, national or international events and, in the process, established or tied three world records – more than enough to gain him admittance in 1978 to the Canadian Amateur Speed Skating Hall of Fame. Gondola Point was his place of birth, the Neptune Rowing Club and Montreal’s M.A.A.A. were his club sponsors, the outdoor ovals of the world were his stage.And now he joins his son Willie in this Hall of New Brunswick sport immortals.
