Biography

Fran McHugh’s career as a basketball, soccer, baseball and track and field athlete began in St. Stephen.In 1961 he was honoured as the best all-round athlete at the University of New Brunswick. His greatest sporting impact, however, has been as a nationally and internationally rated and respected basketball and baseball official and clinician, an avocation that he combined with an exemplary teaching career in Saint John. He has conducted more than 550 clinics for officials throughout Atlantic Canada.To each of these he has brought the expertise that comes from officiating at six CIAU championships as well as at world competitions from Brazil to Yugoslavia, and from Moscow and Montreal to Toronto and Taiwan. Further evidence of his international reputation for excellence can be found in his selection to umpire at the World Junior baseball championships in August of 1997. Enrolled in the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame, June 7, 1997
