Biography

Newcastle's Lorne Whalen is a product of an era that stressed sport versatility. He achieved championship, MVP, and all-star honours in basketball, rugby, track and field, and baseball at the high school, intercollegiate, intermediate or senior levels between 1943 and 1958. His accomplishments while at university were such that he was selected to the St. Francis Xavier University Sports Hall of Fame in 1977, having been identified as that institution's best basketball player and second best all-around athlete over a period that covered the first 50 years of the 20th Century! In 1991 his adopted city of Bathurst enrolled him as a builder in its Sports Hall of Fame. His Province salutes a remarkable athlete who played on 18 championship teams and won some 12 gold medals in track and field, and who, for so many years, has been a bench-mark for athletic excellence in Atlantic Canada. Enrolled in the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame, Jun 4, 1994
