By definition, a builder in the Sports Hall of Fame is one who made significant contributions to the development of sport in the Province. “Oakie” O’Connor of Saint John was associated with the sport of speed skating from 1919 when, as a child of twelve, he won his first Maritime Championship, and then maintained until 1938, an almost unbroken string of provincial, regional and state wins. In baseball, he played, coached, managed, supervised, promoted, scouted, administered and umpired from Little League to Senior.Hockey benefited from his talents as a referee; football as a player, and boxing as a promoter. It is obvious that he was and is a builder of several sports in all four season of a span of years that covers more than six decades. Enrolled in the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame, June 3, 1978
