He served as University of New Brunswick Athletic Director for twenty-nine years, and as Varsity Hockey Coach for twenty of those years.He was also a New Brunswick-Prince Edward Island, Maritime, Willingdon Cup and America’s Cup championship golfer and Gowan Brae club professional. But “Pete” Kelly of St. Vital, Manitoba – the place of his birth, and of Fredericton – his home since 1947, is honoured here because of his professional hockey career that included play with Montreal Victorias and Royals, Charlottetown, St. Louis, Springfield, New York Americans and the 1935 and 1936 Stanley Cup Champion Detroit Red Wings. He began his career with Detroit by playing in the longest game in history, - a long 1-0 Red Wing victory over the Maroons after six overtime periods.And he ended his career with the longest tenure as an Athletic Director in UNB’s one hundred and forty-three year history. Enrolled in the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame, June 3rd, 1979.
