Biographie

They have been referred to as "The basketball pride of the Maritimes" and "The top team in the nation." Their home was the Lady Beaverbrook Gymnasium on the University of New Brunswick campus; their coach and some-time player was the inimitable Howie Ryan; the roster included seven players - Demers, Elgee, Lockhart, Mitton, Owens, Sidwell and Stothart. Their record included the Maritime Intercollegiate, the Maritime Intermediate and the Canadian Intermediate Championships - all of the hoop world open to them. The 108-71 two-game total point win over Toronto West End Y.M.C.A. in 1945 was their crowning glory - but the fact that all of them graduated and moved on to positions of leadership in business and industry, in government and education, confirms that they were the kind of student-athletes to whom success was inevitable. Enrolled in the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame, June 4, 1977.
