Very few are the sport fans who have not entered into a debate about who was the greatest ever in this or that sport.Orr or Gretzky?Palmer of Nicklaus?Carner or Lopez? But when it comes to ladies golf in New Brunswick, it is simply “no contest.”Mary Ellen Driscoll of the Riverside Country Club is in a class by herself.Let’s look at her record: Twenty-Six times club champion; Twelve times a Nova Scotia or Maritime champion; Six times the New Brunswick Junior Champion; Twenty-Four times Amateur Champion; and Thirty-Three times a member of our Provincial team in National Amateur championship competition. … and the beat goes on! In 1987 the City of Saint John honoured her by making her a charter member of its Hall of Fame.Tonight her Provincial Hall of Fame does likewise. But we acknowledge that many chapters remain to be written in the Driscoll golf story. Enrolled in the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame, June 4th, 1988.
