The decade of the 1970s will surely be recorded in the history books as that period when people of all ages turned from spectating to active participation in a wide variety of sport and physical recreation activities. In this respect, Tommy Stewart was at least twenty-five years ahead of the times. This native of Denhead of Monikie, Scotland, started "chasing" a golf ball around the courses of his world early in life - and continued to do so until his death. Although golf fans recall most often his six-stroke victory over trick-shot artist Joe Kirkwood and, as well, the length and accuracy of his long-iron shots, his greatest achievements include New Brunswick-Prince Edward Island Amateur Championships, his membership on five Willingdon Cup teams, and his record string of seven Maritime Seniors Golf Championships. Scotland's loss - he left at the age of 12 - became St. Stephen's, New Brunswick's, and Canadian golf's gain for more than half a century.
