The   late Jim Riley, born in Bayfield was a two-sport athlete in the early years   of the 20th century. He is the first and only athlete in the last 105 years   to play in both the National Hockey League and in Major League Baseball. He   was a member of the 1917 Stanley Cup champion Seattle Metropolitans, the   first American team to win the trophy. He left hockey briefly to join the   Canadian army, returning to the team in time for the 1919-20 season. He   played five more seasons for the Metropolitans after returning from military   service, scoring 23 goals in 24 games one year and 23 in 30 games another. He   also played in the National Hockey League with the Detroit Cougars and the   Chicago Blackhawks. Riley also played major league baseball briefly, becoming   the first man to play both sports professionally. He played 11 years of minor   league baseball, from 1921 through 1932, and batted .300 seven times, appearing   briefly in the majors with the St. Louis Browns and Washington Senators.
