Cynthia Johnston from Rothesay excelled in basketball as a teenager when she led New Brunswick to a bronze medal at the 1985 Canada Games in Saint John. That was the launch of a career that saw her play for the Canadian national women’s team for 14 years. She wore the Maple Leaf at the Pan American Games, world championships, and at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. Before that, she played five seasons at the university level for the Bishop’s Gaiters and was named the school’s female athlete of the year for four years straight. She was a five-time league all-star over her University career, two-time Most Valuable Player, and three-time All-Canadian selection. She played professionally in Europe for 12 years, from 1992 through 2004. In 2020, she was selected as one of the top 100 U Sports players of the 20th century and was inducted into the Bishop’s University Wall of Distinction in 2016.
