Sam Johnston of Miramichi is a world champion in Hanmadang Taekwondo, winning gold at the Hamandang Festival in 2017. He holds an eighth-degree black belt and black belts in five other disciplines. The first New Brunswicker with a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, he introduced the sport to the province in 1991. A provincial, Maritime, and Eastern Canadian champion, he received a national award from Taekwondo Canada in 2012 and international recognition for developing the sport in the region.
