Saint John’s Mark Lackie is the first New Brunswicker ever to win a silver medal at the Olympic Games. His sport was short-track speed skating; the locale was Albertville, France; the event was the 5000 meter relay. His medal-wining career began in 1987 at the Canada Winter Games, followed immediately thereafter by the Canadian and North American age class championships.It was further advanced at the Calgary Olympics in 1988.From 1989 until 1992 he mounted the podium on at least 25 occasions and set world records in the 500 meter event at three world championships. Having previously been honoured by the Saint John and Canadian Speed Skating Halls of Fame, he now rightfully takes his place with Charlie Gorman, Willie Logan, and others who continue to make New Brunswick a speed skating centre of excellence.
