John Cann, a Miramichi native, was a talented six-foot-four, 230-pound athlete who is renowned for his legendary home runs. He represented New Brunswick in baseball at the 1989 Canada Games and played for Canada's National Baseball Institute, where he was the top hitter in 1991. Cann also played hockey, and in 1988, he was named the NB High School Hockey player of the year. He continued to play at the senior level and even had the opportunity to play hockey with Mount Allison University. He helped lead the Newcastle Cardinals to a bronze medal in the Canadian junior baseball championship tournament and won the provincial league championship with the team in 1992. He also played for Team Canada from 1992-1995, including at the 1993 World University Games, where he hit a home run against Japan that helped secure Canada's first-ever bronze medal in senior-level baseball. Overall, John Cann was a versatile and accomplished athlete, with achievements in both baseball and hockey that highlight his dedication, hard work, and talent in sports.
