This Knowlesville native is proud of his Canadian and New Brunswick roots - for it was in Woodstock that he began a career in harness racing that was to span 54 years. At 78 years of age he retired - and Yonkers Raceway honored him by staging an "Avery Night". The successes he enjoyed included seven world-record driving performances; more than 4,000 victories for purses in excess of three and one half million dollars; the United States Trotting Association's Golden Service Award for "meritorius service and dedication to his sport" and the "Good Guy Award" in 1963, for his co-operation with the press in furthering the aims and objectives of harness racing. He obviously is one Good Guy who nearly always finished first. Enrolled in the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame June 5, 1976.
