He has been quoted as saying that “1926 was the most fun-filled period of my life” but anyone who has studied the life and accomplishments of Beef Malcolm might say the same thing about any or all of those years from 1919, when he began his athletic career at Saint John High School, until 1932 when he put away is basketball shoes, baseball bat and sixteen pound shot for the last time. His accomplishments include city, provincial, maritime and Canadian championships, and his trophy shelf is resplendent with, among so many other things, 43 cups and medals in track and field events and a Maritime record that stood for 29 years.Add to these his ten-year stint as captain of the great Trojan Basketball teams, nine Maritime and one Eastern Canadian title, a dash of competitive football and you realize that here we have the happy combination of excellence and versatility. No wonder then, that one of the Press Associations nominated him for consideration as Canada’s outstanding athlete of the first half of the 20th Century! Enrolled in the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame, June 2nd 1973.
