Hall of Fame member Peter Maher suggested that “hockey in Campbellton isn’t a sport- it’s a religion!”What better way to cope with those long North Shore winters than to look forward to spring and the annual hunt for the Hardy Cup, emblematic of Canadian Intermediate hockey supremacy. The Tigers won it in 1972 and then again in 1977 with what has since been described as their “best team ever”; theirs was the first community to win that trophy twice!Led by manager Arnold Firlotte, coach Gerry “Red” Ouellette, captain John Wood, league MVP David Wisener, and all-time scoring leader George Bérubé, they compiled a record of 49 victories, 5 losses and 1 tie, including 28 wins in a row and play-off record of 24 and 1. Like their old home, Memorial Gardens, the 1977 Tigers belong to history.But, as long as hockey remains a religion on the North Shore, they will remain alive and well in the memories of their thousands of loyal fans.
