The New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame Inc. was established in 1970 to recognize and honour those athletes and teams who have achieved outstanding success, and those who have made a significant contribution to the advancement of competitive sport in this province.
Membership Categories
There are two categories of membership in the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame Inc. - Players and Builders. For the purpose of selection, the term "Players" includes Teams. The Builder category includes coaches, officials, organizers, administrators, executive members, and sponsors or patrons.
Eligibility for Election
Individual athletes and amateur teams who by outstanding achievement in high performance athletic competition have brought distinction to New Brunswick; and builders (i.e. coaches, officials, organizers, administrators, etc.) who have made a significant contribution to the development and advancement of high performance athletic competition in New Brunswick, are eligible for election.
Veterans Category
To ensure that the achievements and contributions of individuals and teams from earlier eras are not forgotten, a Veterans' Category has been established. Starting in 2004, one Veteran honoree may be elected annually, in addition to the maximum of five candidates elected under the Hall's current procedures.
Establishing the Veteran's Category will ensure that these nominations are treated fairly, while maintaining the high standards of admission adopted by the Sports Hall of Fame.
Nomination Procedure
To be considered for election, candidates must first be nominated. Nominations must be typewritten or submitted electronically on the official nomination form. Nominations must contain complete and accurate information concerning the record and merits of the candidate, and must have the consent of the nominee, or if deceased, the family.
Eligible nominations will be considered for election in the year nominated and for up to two succeeding years. If the nominee has not been elected after the stipulated review period, the nomination will be considered inactive, and may only be re-submitted after a period of two years has elapsed. The nominator will be advised.
The nomination deadline is January 15th. Nominations received after the deadline will be considered the following year.
Selection
All eligible candidates, including those in the Veterans' Category will be assessed on the following factors:
- the level and significance of their achievements/contributions to sport in New Brunswick;
- the degree of difficulty encountered in achieving success;
- the consistency, dedication and contribution to sport over time;
- and personal qualities/team characteristics.
The maximum value for each of these factors is indicated on the nomination form.
